The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
