King to Broadcast Personal Statement on Illness in Television Address

The Monarch has recorded a personal message about his experience with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's fundraising campaign, organised by medical research organisations and Channel 4.

Buckingham Palace stated the King would reflect on his "recovery journey" as a cancer patient, in a video message on Friday at 20:00 GMT.

The address, recorded at his London residence a fortnight ago, will stress the critical nature of routine screenings to increase the likelihood more people detect the illness at an treatable phase.

This will be a rare update on the medical condition of the King, who has been in a course of therapy since his condition was announced in early last year. Analysts suggest improbable the King will disclose his specific form of cancer.

Fundraising Primary Goal

The Stand Up To Cancer initiative each year raises funds for clinical trials and treatment and urges people to get screenings to improve the chances of an timely detection.

The King's candid approach about his condition, and living with cancer, has been designed to promote education and to persuade more people to get tested - and this will be escalated with this unusual personal contribution.

Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to continue his schedule, upholding a full diary despite his regular rounds of care, and he appears not to have wanted to be characterised by his condition.

The past twelve months has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, undertaking several international tours, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and hosting the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for almost 40 years, including the German president recently.

Charity Broadcast Event

Friday evening's Stand Up to Cancer show on the network, presented by presenters such as several TV personalities, will urge people not to be afraid of getting preventative tests.

Each presenter have been personally touched by cancer - one host disclosed in November she had had an operation for the disease, while Balding was diagnosed with a thyroid condition in the past. Host Hills has previously discussed his late father, who had stomach cancer and then later another illness.

The broadcast will reach out to the estimated nine million people in the UK who health organisations state are not up to date with NHS screening schemes, with an online checker to let people determine if they are eligible for examinations for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an attempt to demystify screenings and illustrate the value of early diagnosis there will be a real-time transmission from treatment centres at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"My aim is to reduce the stigma from health checks and demonstrate the public that they are not alone in this," stated a presenter.

Understanding National Services

At present in the UK, there are several key publicly available checks - for specific cancers - available to certain age groups.

A new scheme for lung health is also being slowly rolled out for people at high risk of developing the illness, primarily aimed at people aged 55-74 years old, who are smokers or have smoked in the past.

Male patients may enquire about prostate cancer checks, but there is lacking a standardised service operational.

Charitable Impact

The Stand Up to Cancer initiative, which has generated over one hundred million pounds for many years, is supporting 73 clinical trials involving many patients.

The Monarch, in a address for dignitaries at a reception for cancer charities in earlier this year, had referred to recognising the "daunting and at times alarming situation" for patients and their loved ones.

But he noted his personal journey of managing cancer had demonstrated that "the darkest moments of disease can be alleviated by the greatest compassion," as he thanked those who cared for those receiving treatment.

The Palace has not revealed what kind of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has undergone. The King's cancer was detected following he had had a prostate procedure.
