A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on Monday seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
