This production, though, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment instead of a critique. The Crafted Superhero Over a long period, the Kremlin and its entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals. “In Russia, the manufactured Putin has long eclipsed the actual person.” Cinematic Reinforcement One recent example is a television show launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer. International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this identical story instead of undercutting it. An adaptation based on a popular book aims to subvert the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery around him. The Fable of the Hesitant President In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence. This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, these events took place. The Reality of the Casting Call No one ever begged Putin to take the job. The position was effectively a casting call with many candidates. At the centre to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state in practice. His list included several politicians, among them an opposition leader later murdered and a security service director. According to an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
