It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office. “Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.” This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House. The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection. A Peaceful Retirement This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release. “The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message. “It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.” Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
